Reflection questions:

Why do you think the dog couldn’t realize his own amazing achievements?

What do you think the moral of this story is?

Consider this alternate ending:

“That night, the little dog snuggled into a warm bed beside the fire, hugged by all the farmers' children, his belly. That night, the little dog snuggled into a warm bed beside the fire, hugged by the farmer's children, his belly full and as he did the dog thought to himself, “I doubt any dragon ever had it so good.”

Does this change what you think the moral is?

Which ending do you feel is more realistic? Why?

How did the farmer’s family’s acceptance of the dog contrast with the other dogs’ rejection? What does this teach us about the importance of support and belonging?

Have you ever had to give up a dream because it wasn’t actually possible for you? If so, what did you take away from that experience?

Is there anything you wish you were but aren’t? What have you learned in pursuing it? Is there anything holding you back?

What can we learn from this story about embracing our true selves and finding contentment in our own abilities and limitations?
